Garry Wilson recounted being outbid on the property six years ago, only to learn the sale hadn’t been completed. A year later, the opportunity arose again, setting in motion a new vision for the building.
A Multi-Faceted Space for Cobh
Initially, Wilson envisioned a boutique hotel, but planning permission proved elusive. Undeterred, he shifted gears, opting for a project that would still contribute significantly to the town’s appeal. “I am going to open a lovely café, a gorgeous gift shop, and provide office space on the higher level,” Wilson explained. “I think the building will be a fabulous addition to the seafront of Cobh, both for locals and for visitors.” He’s aiming high: “I am going to make the café the most beautiful café in Ireland.”
The timing is strategic. Cobh is a popular cruise ship destination, with hundreds of cruise ships
arriving annually, ensuring a steady stream of potential customers. The project is expected to create between 12 and 15 local jobs, further boosting the town’s economy.
A Family’s Connection to Cobh
The Wilson’s commitment to Cobh extends beyond business. They’ve actively supported the town’s cultural scene, contributing to installations like the Gaia exhibit at Cobh Cathedral in 2022 and the striking seafarer shanty sculpture by Ray lonsdale. Their two grown sons, both employed, share their parents’ affection for the town and their growing connection to their Irish heritage.
The couple, originally from Belfast, describe themselves as ‘blow-ins’ into Cobh!
, but emphasize the warm welcome they received from the local community upon arriving in 2016. Their move to Ireland was driven by a desire for peace and safety, a sentiment shared by many during The Troubles. They found that solace and a sense of belonging in Cobh.
Preserving the Past, Building for the Future
Wilson’s passion for preservation is evident not only in the restoration of Belvelly Castle – saving an ancient tower house from the River Lee – but also in his approach to this new project. He recognizes Cobh’s rich history and heritage, noting that millions of people can trace their ancestors who departed here 150 years ago
. he sees his investments as a way to honor that legacy and ensure Cobh continues to thrive.
With the café, gift shop, and office space expected to open within the next 18 months to two years, cobh is poised to gain a new landmark, a testament to the vision and dedication of Garry and Anne Wilson.
