Indian authorities launched mass detentions on October 8, 2026, targeting individuals associated with the Cockroach youth movement across the country. The crackdown occurs just two days ahead of a major planned protest in New Delhi on October 10, 2026, where demonstrators intend to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a controversial revision of voter lists.

Mass Arrests Precede New Delhi Protest Over Voter Lists

Opposition parties, student units, and the Gen Z-led Cockroach Janta Party have held almost daily demonstrations demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar. The controversy stems from a disputed revision of voter lists that critics argue favors the ruling party. Arrested individuals include a senior member and spokesperson of the Cockroach Janta Party, Deepak Baliyan, along with numerous activists nationwide.

Videos posted on social media platform X showed activists being taken away in police vans. A group of students from the western city of Pune traveling by bus to join the October 10 protest in Delhi were intercepted and taken to an unknown location. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke condemned the actions on X, asking why the government did not simply declare an emergency, while CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka claimed at least 10,000 people had been detained across various student organizations, farmer and Dalit organizations, and political parties.

Modi Faces Political Challenge Amid Electoral Collusion Allegations

While Kumar has not commented publicly, both the Election Commission and the BJP have denied all allegations of manipulation. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia dismissed the claims during a media briefing, calling the allegations baseless and attributing them to an irresponsible opposition. Meanwhile, hundreds of CJP supporters rallied in the tech hub of Bengaluru, holding posters with slogans such as Every name counts, Every vote matters and Stop the Murder of Democracy.

Opposition Leaders Detained Near Capital Protest Site

Police action extended beyond youth activists to prominent political figures attempting to reach demonstration sites in New Delhi. On Wednesday, the opposition Congress Party accused police of using brute force to briefly detain party leader Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Vadra, and other lawmakers as they approached the Jantar Mantar protest site.

Delhi Police rejected the allegations, stating that the claims were intended to defame the force. Senior police officer Shrishti Pandey told the Asian News International news agency that officers ensured legal duties were followed without unnecessary actions. Additional demonstrations manifested across other regions, with protest marches by Congress supporters in Telangana and a demonstration by the Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar.
