Cole Palmer Leads Chelsea to Conference League Victory with Humor
Cole Palmer’s outstanding performance helped Chelsea secure the UEFA Conference League title Wednesday, but his post-match antics also grabbed attention. The Blues defeated Real Betis 4-1 in Poland after trailing 1-0 at halftime, marking a historic moment as the first club to win the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. Palmer, with two assists, was named player of the match.
during the post-match interview, Palmer, a rising star in the world of soccer, humorously tucked his player of the match award into his shorts. When asked about it by CBS Sports’ Anita Jones, palmer quipped, “I got no pockets, so I put it there.”
Palmer continued his lighthearted approach in the press conference, inquiring about the selection process for the tournament’s best player. After learning the UEFA Technical Observer Panel makes the decision, he playfully nominated his teammate, Tosin Adarabioyo, for the honour.
“Okay, can someone tell him that Tosin wants it?” Palmer said, pointing at teammate Tosin Adarabioyo, who burst into laughter. “Thank you.”
The 23-year-old Palmer credited manager Enzo Maresca’s halftime adjustments for the team’s second-half surge. Maresca’s advice to win more “second balls” and play with greater urgency spurred Chelsea to victory.
Palmer said maresca “didn’t really say much, to be fair. He just said we’re losing too many second balls,” adding,”We need to start playing like we’re in a final and I think we woke up and we showed up second half.”
Known for his clutch performances, Palmer has previously scored in the Community Shield, UEFA Super Cup for Manchester City, and the Euros final for England. He embraces the pressure of big games.
“I love finals,” Palmer said. “All the finals I’ve played in, I feel like I’ve contributed, so I just like the occasion.”
Palmer acknowledged the conference League win as a significant milestone for Chelsea’s young squad, which was the youngest in the Premier League this season. He believes this victory sets the stage for their return to the Champions League next season.
“This competition’s a good step for us,” Palmer said. “We’re playing in this because last season, we deserved to play in this. like the manager said, now we’re in the Champions League.”
