Cole Palmer to Man Utd? Chelsea Star Linked with Exit & Champions League Missed

Cole Palmer to Man Utd? Chelsea Star Linked with Exit & Champions League Missed

February 25, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

The future of Cole Palmer at Chelsea is once again under scrutiny, with reports suggesting the attacking midfielder could be open to a move to Manchester United. While current Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has publicly downplayed any discontent, the possibility of Palmer returning to the North West – where he grew up as a Manchester United supporter – is gaining traction, fueled by speculation surrounding his recent injury setbacks and the departure of former manager Enzo Maresca.

The 2025/26 season has been a frustrating one for the England international, hampered by a groin injury that required a cautious return to the pitch under both Maresca and Rosenior. Despite his talent, which has been consistently lauded as exceptional, Palmer’s fitness issues have coincided with murmurs of unhappiness at Stamford Bridge. Reports indicate he misses his hometown of Wythenshawe, adding a personal dimension to the transfer talk.

However, Chelsea’s hierarchy appears resolute in their stance. According to reports, the club views Palmer as “untouchable” and has no intention of selling a player who remains their key attacking threat. This internal valuation contrasts with the external perspective offered by former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce, who believes Chelsea would “always sell at the right price.”

Allardyce, speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, suggested that Manchester United’s financial capacity would be the determining factor. “Chelsea will always sell at the right price, so it’s whether Manchester United have the money that they’d want for him, Cole Palmer,” he stated. He further emphasized the potential benefit for United, highlighting Palmer’s age – 23 – and the prospect of securing seven to eight years of service from a “tremendous talent.”

The potential for Palmer to fill the void left by Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford has also been floated, though no concrete discussions have been publicly confirmed. The situation is complicated by Palmer’s connection to Manchester United as a childhood fan, a detail that adds emotional weight to the speculation. Gus Poyet, a former Chelsea midfielder, cautioned Palmer against making the move, arguing that Manchester United are no longer the dominant force they once were and that Chelsea currently represents a more stable and successful club.

Poyet’s assessment is stark: “I wouldn’t, if I was him. I’m not saying this because I played for Chelsea, because this is not the United from Sir Alex Ferguson. People that say, ‘it’s still Man United’. I’m sorry, no. The last five years, six years? No.” He believes Chelsea’s structure and consistency currently surpass those of Manchester United.

Beyond Palmer’s individual situation, Allardyce also offered a broader prediction regarding the Premier League’s Champions League qualification race. He anticipates Arsenal and Manchester City securing the top two spots, followed by Aston Villa, Liverpool and Manchester United. Allardyce attributes United’s potential success to a focused approach, free from the distractions of European competition, allowing manager Michael Carrick to maximize training time and player recovery.

“Michael Carrick has got United buzzing and they’ve got no other distractions. Their only target is the Premier League. They have time to do all the coaching, rest, nutrition and psychology they want to do and build the players up for the next weekend,” Allardyce explained. “They’ll have more time off in the week for coaching and focusing on the next game, and of they’ll obviously recover quicker. They’ll have more energy physically and mentally. They should have a better chance than some of the other teams who are up there.”

The possibility of Chelsea missing out on Champions League qualification, should Palmer depart, is also being discussed. Allardyce’s prediction suggests a competitive landscape where even established clubs like Chelsea could struggle to secure a top-four finish. The club’s willingness to part with their star player, even if reluctantly, could be influenced by their assessment of their chances of competing at the highest level without him.

As the season progresses, the situation surrounding Cole Palmer will undoubtedly remain a key storyline. Whether Chelsea can retain their prized asset, or whether Manchester United can capitalize on his potential availability, will have significant implications for both clubs’ ambitions in the coming years. The financial aspect, as Allardyce pointed out, will be crucial, and the coming months will reveal whether United are willing to meet Chelsea’s valuation for a player who represents both a sporting and sentimental draw.
