Colombia Secures First Win in Doubles Match

In the Davis Cup World Group I doubles match between Japan and Colombia, held at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki and Yosuke Watanuki lost to Colombia’s Nicolas Barrientos and Cristian Rodriguez. The Colombian duo won the match 7-6 (4), 2-6, 3-6, securing their first win in the tournament.

The match lasted 2 hours and 24 minutes. Colombia played as scheduled, but Japan changed Watanuki’s partner from Kei Nishikori to Mochizuki. Mochizuki and Watanuki played doubles for the first time since February 2022, but their record was 1 win, 2 losses.

Previous Matches

In the opening singles match on the first day, Yoshihito Nishioka defeated Adria Soriano Varela 6-2, 6-4. In the second match, Kei Nishikori defeated Nicolas Mejia 6-4, 6-4, putting Japan on the brink of qualifying for the finals.

Tournament Format

The Davis Cup has changed to a new format since 2019, developed with the cooperation of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Cosmos. World Group I, in which 24 countries compete in a home and away format, is a best-of-three-set match with two singles matches on the first day, one doubles match and two singles matches (the first team to win three matches wins) on the second day.

  • Match 3: Shintaro Mochizuki (Kinoshita Group: Doubles 1155th) / Yosuke Watanuki (SBC Medical Group: Doubles 453th) 7-6(4), 2-6, 3-6 vs Nicolas Barrientos (Doubles 53rd) / Cristian Rodriguez (Doubles 107th)
  • Match 4: Yoshihito Nishioka (Miki House: Singles 54th) vs Nicolas Mejia (Singles 237th)
  • Match 5: Kei Nishikori (UNIQLO: 205th in singles) vs Adria Soriano Varela (460th in singles)
