In the most recent investigation, researchers examined cancer mortality in the US between 1990 and 2023 and focused on the most lethal diseases in the population under 50: leukemia, brain tumors, breast cancer, lung cancer and colorectal cancer.
Over the time period considered (33 years), 1.27 million Americans under 50 died of cancer and, in general, mortality fell by 44%. However, analyzing the various neoplasms individually, it emerged that deaths decreased for all types of cancer except one, that of the colon-rectum, whose mortality increased by 1.1% each year from 2005 onwards. While it decreased annually by 0.3% for the brain, by 1.4% for the breast, by 2.3% for leukemia and as much as 5.7% for the lung.

«Quello al colon-retto che, con quasi 49mila (48.706) nuovi casi registrati ogni anno, è il secondo tipo di tumore più frequente in Italia ed è anche il secondo nella poco ambita classifica dei più letali, causa di circa 20mila decessi annui – ricorda Carmine Pinto, direttore dell’Oncologia Medica al Comprehensive Cancer Center dell’AUSL- IRCCS di Reggio Emilia –. «Il tumore del colon-retto è in aumento nei giovani, soprattutto a causa della mancanza di attività fisica e dall’alimentazione scorretta che sono sempre più diffusi anche in Italia. «inoltre il carcinoma colon rettale sembra avere caratteristiche più aggressive in giovane età e questo lo rende più difficile da curare - conclude Scartozzi -. A peggiorare le cose c’è il fatto che gli under 50 arrivano spesso tardi alla diagnosi perché ignorano i primi segnali , quali per esempio diarrea frequente e perdurante, perdite di sangue (rosso vivo, insieme alle feci o meno), dolori addominali continui e che persistono per lunghi periodi».
