[뉴욕=뉴스핌] Reporter Kim Min-jeong = Columbia University, an Ivy League school in New York, USA, decided to cancel the entire school’s commencement ceremony this year and hold a smaller graduation ceremony due to pro-Palestinian protests.

Columbia University issued a statement on the 6th (local time), saying, “The past few weeks have been extremely difficult for our community,” and added, “Instead of a university-wide commencement ceremony scheduled for On May 15, we hold a graduation day where students are honored individually with their peers.” “We decided to make the graduation ceremony at the university level the center of graduation activities,” he said.

He then explained the reason for canceling the school-wide commencement ceremony, saying, “Having a large-scale school-wide commencement ceremony on campus raises security concerns that have been impossible to address.”

The university explained that it was looking for another location to host the event, but was unable to find a suitable place to host the graduation ceremony, which is usually attended by more than 50,000 people. “Like the students, we are extremely disappointed with these results,” the statement added.

This is the second time Columbia University has canceled a large-scale commencement ceremony since 2020, when the COVID-19 (global pandemic) pandemic was ongoing.

Columbia University plans to host other smaller events for nursing, journalism and education graduates. Events to be held outdoors on university campuses will be moved indoors.

Pro-Palestinian protests that have been taking place on the Columbia University campus over the past few weeks eventually led to the arrest of more than 2,000 protesters and the dispatch of the police.

Columbia University said in its announcement today that it still wants to hold an event to replace the school-wide commencement ceremony on the 15th, but did not reveal details.
