Comau and Intecells are presenting a joint industrial roll-to-roll surface treatment system at The Battery Show North America, held from October 12 to 15, 2026, at Huntington Place in Detroit, according to reports from industriaitaliana.it. The technology utilizes field-proven cold plasma to accelerate and optimize key phases of battery cell manufacturing.
The system treats the surfaces of battery electrodes and separators, allowing electrolytes to penetrate and distribute more evenly across the materials. This process reduces filling, soaking, and drying times while lowering the required heat, energy consumption, floor space, and internal cell resistance.
Expanding Industrial Scale Through Cold Plasma Technology
The partnership builds on a 2025 investment in which Comau acquired a stake in Intecells, combining Intecells’ proprietary technology with Comau’s expertise in industrializing and scaling advanced manufacturing processes. The initiative targets a global sector projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate exceeding 15% between 2025 and 2030, as reported by industriaitaliana.it.
The growth of cell manufacturing technology is creating significant opportunities across a market that spans batteries for both transportation and energy storage systems as well as renewables and electrification infrastructure.
Pietro Gorlier
Comau Chief Executive Officer Pietro Gorlier noted that the collaboration addresses customer demands for scalable production while controlling energy use, production duration, and capital expenditure. Intecells Founder and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Xiaohong Gayden emphasized that pairing advanced manufacturing physics with gigafactory automation allows original equipment manufacturers and cell producers to deploy high-efficiency lines globally.
Showcasing Formation Systems and Expanding Global Footprint
Alongside the roll-to-roll plasma system displayed at Booth #3626 in Detroit, Comau is highlighting a newly delivered semi-automated cell formation and testing hub built for the National Institute of Chemistry. The platform accommodates pouch, cylindrical, and prismatic cells across laboratory prototypes and high-power industrial applications, incorporating dedicated formation chambers and climatic testing stations for academic and industrial users.

Following the Detroit exhibition, Comau plans to exhibit its broader electrification portfolio at The Battery Show India from October 22 to 24, 2026, at the India Expo Mart in Greater Noida. That showcase will feature technologies spanning cell, module, and pack manufacturing, e-Drive production, and robotics designed for sensitive environments.
We need to transform battery manufacturing beyond iterative improvements in order to meet the energy demands of AI data centers and global mobility.
