Comedian Jo Won-seok Opens Up About Overcoming Adversity and Finding a New Path as a Trot Singer

Comedian Jo Won-seok, who is a ‘prisoner’, opened up about his difficult past.

On the 16th, comedian Cho Won-seok appeared as a guest on the YouTube broadcast ‘Everyday with the Lord’ hosted by comedian Lee Seong-mi.

On this day, Jo Won-seok answered a question about his current situation by saying, “I’m doing well and in good health,” and announced that he had turned into a trot singer after giving up being a comedian

Cho Won-seok, who debuted through the MBC Comedian Selection Contest in 2002, was selected as a comedian for SBS’s 7th open recruitment the following year. Since then, he has been loved as the character ‘Guin Minsu’, a parody of the actor Choi Minsu.

However, Jo Won-seok admitted that he had a difficult time despite the popularity of the ‘Prisoner Min-su’ character. When I was in the 6th grade in elementary school, my father, and later my mother, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and given three months to live, and died after a year of fighting the disease. He admitted, “I was so sad the day my first broadcast as a comedian aired. I don’t have to share my sadness, but it was so sad that I had no one to share my joy with.”

He continued, “I was an alcoholic. In the end, I created a problem because of alcohol. I got drunk and drove twice. In fact, I was the kind of person who shouldn’t be a comedian. I was too scared . I solved this problem with alcohol.” He ended up suffering from bipolar disorder.

He said, “I tried the extreme decision twice. The first time, I swallowed a lot of sleeping pills and took 10 pills. I guess I didn’t want to die. The second time, I tried to jump, but an acquaintance called me and asked, ‘Are you all right?’ and I went down to cry.” After that, he said, on the recommendation of senior comedians Jeon Yoo-seong and Lee Seong-mi, he started going to church and started living a new life.

In particular, he, who is active as a trot singer, attracted attention by expressing satisfaction, saying, “I am living my second life as a trot singer for the second half of my life.”
