Indonesian Lawmaker Calls for Stricter Regulations After Doctor Accused of Sexual Assault
Jakarta – A member of the Indonesian House of Representatives is demanding a firm response to allegations of sexual assault involving a medical resident. Hadrian Irfani, Vice chairman of Commission X, addressed the case of Priguna Anugerah P, an anesthesiology resident at Unpad/RSHS Bandung, who is accused of assaulting a patient’s companion.
Zero Tolerance for Sexual Violence
“I want to convey a firm attitude: acts of sexual violence, in any form and context, cannot be tolerated, especially when committed by individuals from higher education institutions,” irfani told reporters Thursday.
Call for Stronger Regulations and Title Revocation
Irfani stated that this case should serve as a catalyst for strengthening regulations against sexual violence within educational settings. He also called for the revocation of Priguna’s title as a deterrent.
“As a deterrent effect, of course, we will convey [this message] so that the incident will not be repeated in the future,” Irfani said.
Maintaining Public trust in Education
Irfani emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust in Indonesian education. He stated that universities should set an example of anti-violence behavior.
“I encourage tertiary institutions to strengthen the prevention, early detection system, and handling of cases of sexual violence in the campus environment,” he said.
Ministerial Regulation as a Tool for Prevention
Irfani highlighted Minister of Research and Technology Regulation Number 55 of 2024, which concerns the prevention and handling of violence in higher education. He urged it’s proper implementation to ensure campus safety.
“This ministerial regulation requires every university to form a task force to prevent and handle violence tasked with handling cases of physical, psychological, harassment, sexual violence, discrimination, intolerance, and policies that contain violence in the campus environment,” he explained.
He added that socializing anti-violence policies and providing safe reporting mechanisms are crucial.
Creating a Safe Educational Environment
Irfani believes that the effective implementation of these regulations can foster a safe and agreeable educational environment, preventing violence. He also stressed the importance of fair and firm law enforcement and openness.
“We also encourage fair and firm law enforcement towards the perpetrators, and ensure that the institution does not cover up the case in order to maintain the image,” he explained.
“It is also vital for protection for victims, including psychological and legal recovery, so that they do not undergo revictimization where victims of violence experience trauma due to bad treatment after violence occurred,” he added.
