A press conference in Rome addressed the critical role of hand hygiene and indoor air quality in healthcare settings.
A press conference was held March 25 at the Senate in Rome, focusing on the importance of hand hygiene and indoor air quality within healthcare structures. The event, titled “Hygiene of Hands and Indoor Air in Healthcare structures: The Role of Drying Systems and the Management of Indoor Air Quality for the Prevention of Citizen’s Health and Operators,” was organized in collaboration with Assocarta and Afidamp.
According to Francesco Pasquini, president of the group of cards for hygienic-sanitary uses of associates and president of afidamp, Hand hygiene is essential to safeguard people’s health, especially within hospital structures.Speaking about hygiene and hand drying together has great relevance. Associations are working jointly to disseminate correct facts for the protection of hygiene and health, and to promote good practices starting from healthcare facilities.
Pasquini added that the hygiene industrial supply chain represents Italian excellence, strongly oriented toward environmental obligation and innovation, with over 50% of its products being exported. Italy is the leading European producer of cards for hygiene and health use, accounting for over 20% of the overall production with approximately 1.6 million tons per year. This production takes place in 53 plants employing more than 4,800 direct employees.
Gaetano Settimo, coordinator of the National Indoor Policy Study Group of the Istituto Superiore di sanità, highlighted the meaning of indoor air quality in health facilities and workplaces. He noted that indoor air quality plays a central role in the health of patients and operators, considering that a person needs about 3 liters of water and 15,000 liters of air per day.
settimo stated, Good indoor air quality is a basic requirement for health environments. It is indeed a fundamental part of the provision of health services and must have the utmost priority both in terms of programming and training and funding. The quality of indoor air was the past, it is the present and it will be the future of the design and daily management of healthcare facilities. The quality of the indoor air has not changed its role. The difference can protect and improve the health of personnel, patients and visitors, while reducing waiting times, saving money and aiming for the decarbonisation of the SSN.
Mark Wilcox, Head of Research & Development in Microbiology at Leeds Teaching hospital, Professor of Medical Microbiology, University of Leeds, and National Clinical Director in Infazion Prevention & Control (NHS England) addressed the importance of hand washing.
Wash your hands is fundamental for a healthy life.
Mark Wilcox
Wilcox also cautioned about the drying phase of hand hygiene.
However, it is equally fundamental that the washing of the hands is not compromised by wrong choices in the drying phase (when it comes to drying them). Unlike paper towels, electric towels can literally splash possibly contaminated droplets on the people present in a bathroom and in the surrounding environment. It is indeed crucial to take into account these risks when you decide the best way to dry your hands.

Hygiene of Hands and Indoor Air Quality: Essential for Healthcare
Introduction: The Importance of Hygiene in Healthcare
A recent press conference in Rome highlighted the critical roles of hand hygiene and indoor air quality within healthcare structures. Organized in collaboration with assocarta and Afidamp, the event emphasized the necessity of prioritizing these aspects to protect the health of patients, healthcare workers, and visitors. This article delves into the key takeaways from the conference, providing insights into best practices and their importance for a healthy surroundings.
Why is Hand Hygiene Crucial in Healthcare?
Hand hygiene is fundamental, especially within hospital structures. Mark Wilcox,Head of Research & Development in Microbiology at Leeds Teaching Hospital and Professor of Medical Microbiology,University of Leeds, emphasized that washing hands is essential for a healthy life. Here’s why:
Preventing Infection: Hand hygiene is a primary defense against the spread of infections, which can be notably dangerous in healthcare settings.
Protecting Vulnerable Patients: Healthcare environments frequently enough house individuals with weakened immune systems, making them more susceptible to infections.
Protecting Healthcare Workers: Regularly sanitizing hands protects hospital personnel.
What is the Role of Hand-Drying in Hand Hygiene?
hand-drying is a very crucial aspect of hand hygiene because it can either compromise it or not. Professor Wilcox of Leeds Teaching hospital stated that “it is equally fundamental that the washing of the hands is not compromised by wrong choices in the drying phase”.
Consider these points:
Electric Dryers: Studies show that electric towels can splatter possible contaminated droplets on the people in the bathroom and in the environment.(source: Mark wilcox, Leeds teaching Hospital)
Paper Towels: paper towels do not splash contaminated liquid droplets.
Decision making: It is crucial to take these risk factors into account when deciding the best way to dry hands.
Why is Indoor Air Quality a Priority in Healthcare Facilities?
Indoor air quality (IAQ) plays a central role in the health of patients and operators in healthcare settings. Ensuring good IAQ is a basic requirement for health environments. according to gaetano Settimo, coordinator of the national Indoor Policy Study Group of the Istituto Superiore di sanità, good IAQ is a fundamental part of health services and must be a priority. How Can We improve Indoor Air Quality in Healthcare Settings?
Here are key strategies:
Prioritize and Maintain Proper Ventilation: Adequate ventilation ensures the constant exchange of air, removing pollutants and circulating fresh air.
Control Sources of Pollution: This includes choosing low-emission building materials and regularly cleaning to remove dust and other contaminants.
* Training and Education: Healthcare workers, patients, and visitors should all be educated on the importance of hygiene.
Summary: Key takeaways
The following table summarizes the key points discussed at the press conference, emphasizing the importance of both hand
hygiene and indoor air quality in healthcare settings.
| Aspect | Importance | Key Considerations |
| —————— | —————————————————————————————————————————————– | ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– |
| Hand Hygiene | Essential for protecting the health of patients and healthcare workers and is a primary defense against spreading infections. | Proper hand-washing techniques and careful consideration of hand-drying methods (avoid splash from electric dryers). |
| Indoor Air Quality | Vital for the health of patients and staff, integral to providing health services, and necessary for improved healthcare environments. | Prioritize good ventilation, manage sources of pollution, and provide education around hygiene and air quality to healthcare staff, patients, and visitors. |
