The fermentation product of lactic acid bacteria from black barley was found to have an anti-obesity effect.

Gochang Berry & Bio Food Research Institute Over the past two years, research has been conducted with Cheongmaek Co, Ltd (CEO Kim Jae-joo), an agricultural corporation, through a project overseen by the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises and Enterprises New. it was revealed on the 7th that it confirmed the effect of inhibiting lipogenesis by %.

As a result of the experiment, it was shown that body weight and adipose tissue weight were significantly reduced when fermented black barley extract was fed daily to laboratory rats fed a high fat diet for 8 weeks to induce obesity.

In particular, blood triglyceride and total cholesterol levels were reduced by up to 22% in animal models. Levels of the hormone leptin and insulin in the blood, which are indicators of obesity, also decreased, proving the effects of fermented black barley extract on reducing body fat and improving blood lipids.

This means that fermented black barley can be used as a functional food material with the effect of reducing body fat.

The research organization applied for a domestic patent for this content and published it in the May 2023 issue of the Korean Journal of Food and Nutritional Science.

A representative product made with black barley from Gochang is Jinro Hite barley drink, which has surpassed 250 million bottles in cumulative sales.

Lee Hee-kwon, director of the research institute, said, “We will contribute to increasing producer income and revitalizing the local barley industry by verifying the additional functionality of black barley as a regional specialty crop and expanding the processing range.”
