Connecticut Man Dies in Vermont Snowmobile Crash

A 62-year-old man from Chester, Connecticut, died Sunday afternoon after a snowmobile crash in Stannard, Vermont. Kevin Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Vermont State Police.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:12 p.m. On VAST Trail 513, near Norway Road. Investigators reported that Smith was traveling west on the trail when his snowmobile, a Bombardier Ski-Doo, drifted slightly off the north side and struck a stump.

Following the initial impact, Smith lost control of the snowmobile, which subsequently tipped over, ejecting him into several trees. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but were unable to revive him, police said.

Authorities have stated that neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash. Smith was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. Hardwick Rescue, the Hardwick Fire Department, and the Greensboro Fire Department assisted troopers at the scene.

The Vermont State Police investigation is ongoing, but further details were not immediately available as of Monday evening. The incident marks a tragic loss for the Connecticut community, and highlights the inherent risks associated with snowmobiling, even when safety precautions are taken.

Snowmobiling is a popular winter activity in Vermont, with an extensive network of trails maintained by the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST). VAST Trail 513 is a frequently used route, connecting several towns in the northeastern part of the state. While the trails are generally well-maintained, unexpected hazards such as stumps and trees can pose a danger to riders.

This incident serves as a reminder for snowmobile operators to exercise caution, remain aware of their surroundings, and adhere to all safety guidelines. The Vermont State Police encourage riders to prioritize safety and to report any hazardous conditions they encounter on the trails.

The death of Kevin Smith is the latest in a series of snowmobile-related fatalities in the region in recent years. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of responsible riding and the need for riders to be properly trained and equipped.
