There’s a lot. There’s a lot that I need to say, but they have the Heritage game coming up, so as respect for them and for celebration of hockey, I’m going to postpone that to a later date,
Connor Hellebuyck said on Saturday. The goaltender was introduced by the New Jersey Devils on Saturday, one day after a blockbuster trade ended his 11-season tenure in Winnipeg, according to Sportsnet.ca and CBC.
The Blockbuster Trade and Roster Exchange
The deal brought a package including forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goaltender Nico Daws, prospect Alexander Command, and a pair of draft picks to the Winnipeg Jets, according to Sportsnet.ca and CBC. Winnipeg general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff stated he felt very comfortable
with his end of the deal, particularly snagging Command, who was a player the Jets considered choosing in the 2026 NHL Draft, as CBC reported. In the 2020 draft, New Jersey selected Mercer at 18th overall in the first round when he was 24, while choosing Daws at 84th overall in the third round at age 25. Bjugstad is on injured reserve, according to the Winnipeg Free Press.

Winnipeg Prepares for the Heritage Classic Without Their Franchise Goalie
As NHL.com reported, Sunday marks the next outdoor contest for the Jets against the Montreal Canadiens at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg during the 2026 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic. Jets captain Adam Lowry addressed reporters on Oct. 17, noting that the team focuses purely on the players currently in the locker room. According to NHL.com, Hellebuyck holds the franchise records for the Jets/Atlanta Thrashers in shutouts (45), wins (345), games started (615), and games played (625).

New Jersey Plans the Goalie Return to Winnipeg on November 10
Sportsnet.ca reported that Devils GM Sunny Mehta mentioned the organization is actively formulating a careful and collaborative strategy regarding when Hellebuyck will play again. New Jersey has eight games before its lone visit of the season to Winnipeg on Nov. 10, according to Sportsnet.ca and NHL.com. Hellebuyck has been skating in Michigan with NHL-calibre players Robby Fabbri and Antonio Stranges, preparing for his eventual return, NHL.com and Sportsnet.ca reported.
