Controversy Erupts: Brandenburg Blocks Islamic Center in Fürstenwalde Amid Heated Debate
Brandenburg’s Interior Minister Bans Islamic Society Amid Extremism Concerns
The Ministry of the Interior in Brandenburg has taken action against the Islamic Center Fürstenwalde al-Salam, citing concerns over extremism and anti-constitutional activities.
Brandenburg’s Interior Minister, Michael Stübgen (CDU), has officially banned the association, stating that it was directed against the idea of international understanding and the constitutional order. The ministry’s decision was based on evidence that the society was affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood and the terrorist organization Hamas.
A spokesperson for the ministry explained that the ban would be implemented by the police, with searches to be conducted on club rooms in Fürstenwalde and private apartments in Brandenburg and Berlin.
“We cannot tolerate societies that are directed against the constitutional order or the idea of international understanding,” said Stübgen. ”Hotspots of Stone Age Islamic culture” would have to be nipped in the bud to prevent conflict.
The minister emphasized that the hiring of young people with extreme ideas in an organized manner posed significant risks. He stated that these individuals did not become extremists in a vacuum, but were rather influenced by “strange radicalization strategies of organizations and extreme efforts.” Stübgen emphasized the need to address the root cause of this issue.
The association, founded in Fürstenwalde in 2018, operated the al-Salam Mosque and offered various activities for Muslims in the region. However, the Brandenburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution classified the club as a confirmed extremist organization in July 2023.
According to assessments by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the association’s extreme agenda was evident in its events and high-profile activities. Social media posts also referred to Islamic extremist organizations, and the association disseminated content from organizations close to the Islamic Muslim Brotherhood on its social media channels.
Furthermore, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution reported that the association disseminated anti-Semitic content that questioned Israel’s right to exist.
