Controversy Over Election Broadcasting Sanctions: People Power Party and Public Media Association Dominate Complaints

As controversy continues over the excessive and partial sanctions imposed by the Deliberation Committee on election broadcasting for the 22nd general elections, it was reported that all 181 complaints from political parties and groups submitted to the Ministry of Defense were submitted by the People Power Party and the conservative party media group “Public Media Association”.

According to data obtained from the office of Representative Cho Seung-rae of the Democratic Party of Korea, 304 complaints were received in the terrestrial broadcasting industry in a period of about three months, from December 14 last year to the 20th of last month.

However, among them, 149 complaints filed by political parties were all filed by the People Power Party, and 32 complaints by groups were all filed by the Public Relations Coalition.

Together, the two complaints amounted to 60% of all terrestrial broadcast complaints, and notably these complaints were focused on MBC.

Sixty-seven percent of People Power Party complaints and 68% of Public Relations Alliance complaints were about MBC news and radio programs, followed by complaints about CBS and YTN.

The complaints of these two organizations were included in the frontal defense agenda.

Notably, many of the reports under review were not directly related to the National Assembly elections, such as the parole controversy of President Yoon Seok-yeol’s mother-in-law, the Biden-Nalmyeon ruling controversy, and the Itaewon Special Dispute on veto act However, members of the defense commission said: “The election was criticized by reports that undermined fairness and neutrality. It was reported that the sanctions were imposed on the grounds that it ‘could affect’ .

Furthermore, it is highlighted that two of the nine members of the defense commission are known to be former leaders of the Public Unification Association, which constitutes a conflict of interest.

Democratic Party lawmaker Cho Seung-rae criticized, saying: “After the appointment of President Ryu Hee-rim, the Defense Security Committee, following the Defense Review Committee, has lost its function as an independent deliberative body and degenerated into an agent of the regime’s repression of broadcasting. .”
