Amid strong opposition from players regarding the Automatic Ball Strike System (ABS), the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) has released some pitch analysis data.

On the 26th, the KBO shared some ABS results for Moon Dong-ju on the 23rd and Ryu Hyun-jin (Hanwha Eagles) on the 24th, which recently sparked controversy. Both players played in the KT Wiz away game held at the KT Wiz Park in Suwon, but the results of the ABS decision were questioned. In particular, Ryu Hyun-jin raised his voice before the game on the 25th, saying, “In the 3rd inning, the ball was judged to be low, but in the 5th inning, it went in almost the same height, but Fe the ball fell a little further in the 5th inning, so it should have been a ball.” The 3rd and 5th innings that Ryu Hyun-jin mentioned were all Jo Yong-ho’s innings. KBO emphasized once again that Ryu Hyun-jin’s 3rd pitch in the 3rd inning was a ball and the 3rd pitch in the 5th inning was a ball.

As for the reason why it was declared a 3rd inning ball, the KBO said it passed 0.15cm above the bottom of the ABS middle zone, but failed to pass the bottom of the ABS end zone by 0.78cm. The course was also compared to the third pitch (ball) thrown by Cheon Seong-ho during his at-bat in the first inning. An ABS is judged a strike only if it meets the highest and lowest height standards in two places: the middle and end of home plate. The strike zone (S zone) varies depending on the height of the player. The top of the S zone is 56.35% of the player’s height, and the bottom is 27.64% of the player’s height. For the same reason, the KBO also directly refuted the backlash against Moon Dong-joo’s pitch on the 23rd.

This year, the KBO League is the first in the world to introduce and apply ABS to the first team. The US Major League Baseball (MLB), which is active in the system, is still testing it only in the minor league. Last June, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred did not confirm the official rollout date, saying, “Despite all the testing, there are still some issues that have not been resolved.” There is a lot of interest on the field about whether the system will be delayed, but there are quite a few complaints among players.

The same goes for foreign players. Pitcher A said, “The ABS zone seems to be a little different at each stadium. When I talked to him, he said other players feel the same way. Pitcher B said, “From my actual experience, I don’t like how many things that look like strikes from the pitcher’s angle are judged as balls,” and added, “It’s not easy because I’ n feel that the strike zone is different for each stadium. . Hopefully it’s consistent in every stadium.” Due to Ryu Hyun-jin’s public complaint, players’ distrust of ABS has come to the fore, and it will be interesting to see what outcome the KBO’s rebuttal will lead to.
