Controversy Surrounds Land Ownership in Seoul-Yangpyeong Expressway Project

A Controversial Land Ownership Issue Surrounding Seoul-Yangpyeong Expressway Project

Introduction

A recent development in the construction of the Seoul-Yangpyeong Expressway has raised eyebrows and stirred controversy. It has come to light that a portion of the new route passes through land owned by Geon-hee Kim’s family, the wife of President Seok-yeol Yoon. This has sparked allegations of preferential treatment and calls for transparency in the project.

The Land Ownership

Investigations have revealed that the former county governor and his relatives possess 10,000 square meters of land in 14 different parcels in Asin-ri, Okcheon-myeon, Yangpyeong-gun. Significantly, this area is in close proximity to Jeungdong-ri, Yangseo-myeon, Yangpyeong-gun, which was the originally proposed endpoint of the expressway project during its preliminary feasibility study in April 2021. Some of the land parcels were acquired by Jeong in 1998 and 2004, while others were received as gifts or inheritance from ancestors, jointly owned by the former county governor and his family.

The Explanation

In response to these allegations, Jeong clarified that Asin-ri, Okcheon-myeon holds personal significance as his father’s hometown, where his cousin and many other families reside, including himself. He pointed out that the distance between the proposed endpoint of the highway route and his land in Asin-ri is approximately 1.6 km. Furthermore, he emphasized that reaching the area required crossing a substantial mountain due to the absence of direct road access. Jeong vehemently refuted any suggestions of preferential treatment, dismissing them as baseless suspicions.

Location Details

It is important to note that the land closest to the intended endpoint of Wonan encompasses a single parcel in Asin-ri, amounting to around 300 pyeong (883 m2, 267 pyeong).

The Controversy

The Seoul-Yangpyeong Expressway project has been mired in controversy, and the local community is particularly dismayed by the recent decision of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Won Hee-ryong to cancel the project. These latest revelations regarding the land ownership only further intensify the ongoing debate.

Seoul-Yangpyeong Expressway Project Near the end of the new route, there is land belonging to President Seok-yeol Yoon’s wife, Geon-hee Kim’s family, and controversy is brewing.

The former county governor and his relatives were found to own 10,000 square meters (3,000 pyeong) of land in 14 parcels in Asin-ri, Okcheon-myeon, Yangpyeong-gun.

Asin-ri, Okcheon-myeon is close to Jeungdong-ri, Yangseo-myeon, Yangpyeong-gun, which was the end point of the original route when the Seoul-Yangpyeong Expressway project passed the preliminary feasibility study in April 2021.

Some of the lands Jeong bought in 1998 and 2004 are said to be included along with the lands jointly owned by the former county governor and his family as a gift or inheritance from ancestors.

Regarding this, Jeong said, “Asin-ri, Okcheon-myeon is my father’s hometown, my cousin lives there, I live, and many families live there,” he said.

“From the proposed end point of the highway route
The distance to Asin-ri, Okcheon-myeon, where his land is located, is about 1.6 km,” he said.

“Also, there is no road, so you have to cross a big mountain to get there, and the suspicion of preferential treatment is absurd,” he refuted.

He said, “The land closest to the end of Wonan is one parcel in Asin-ri, which is about 300 pyeong (883 m2, 267 pyeong).”

The Seoul-Yangpyeong Expressway was controversial, and the local community is upset as Land, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Won Hee-ryong decided to cancel the Seoul-Yangpyeong Expressway project.
