Controversy Surrounds New Name Proposal of Gyeonggi North Special Self-Governing Province

The “Public Accounting Meeting with New Name of Gyeonggi North Special Self-Governing Province” was held yesterday at the Gyeonggi Province North Government Building.

A calligrapher appears and writes the words “Pyeonghwa Nuri Self-Governing Special Province” on a large piece of paper spread on the floor.

At the event, Gyeonggi Province announced that the “Pyeonghwa Nuri Special Self-Governing Province,” proposed by 91-year-old Shin Jeong-im, who lives in Daegu, won first prize in the northern province’s new name competition. of Gyeonggi.

It is a name that conveys the meaning of creating a peaceful and hopeful world, but soon after the announcement there was strong opposition from residents in northern Gyeonggi Province.

In a YouTube live broadcast hosted by the Gyeonggi provincial office, the most recommended comment was: “It is the most basic and tasteless regional name in half a millennium since Dangun” and “It will forever remain a historical stigma.”

Furthermore, sarcasms such as: “Pyeongnudo in short: am I now a resident of ‘Pyeongnudo’” came from the local community?

Resistance was also raised, asking, “Why did someone from the Daegu region call Gyeonggi Province?” or “They just put an ideological framework without investing in local infrastructure and transport.”

A petition titled “We Oppose Peace Nuri Autonomous Province” was posted on the Gyeonggi Provincial Office website and, unusually, received more than 28,000 signatures in one day and was listed as the “most recommended petition.”

Although the name “Gyeonggi” will be retained in the southern Gyeonggi region, there appears to be great resentment in the northern region over its exclusion, but Gyeonggi Province’s position is that it has not yet been confirmed.

″I wanted to come up with a really cool name. I don’t know if I could carry this name through while making special laws in the future, or if I might end up using another name due to various official government matters…”

Previously, Gyeonggi Province had requested approval of a referendum by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security in September last year for the Gyeonggi Province branch, but the request was not accepted.

Gyeonggi-do plans to promote division again when the “Special Law on the Establishment of the Northern Special Autonomous Province” is proposed to the 22nd National Assembly.
