Justice Finally Catches Up to Long-Evading Murderer

In a tale that spanned four decades, convicted murderer John Crerar, who evaded justice for over 20 years, has passed away while serving a life sentence for the brutal killing of 23-year-old Phyllis Murphy in 1979. The horror of this cold case gripped Ireland, and the grim story finally reached its denouement with Crerar’s death at age 76.

Phyllis Murphy’s life was cruelly cut short as she waited for a bus in Co Kildare. Her naked body was found in the Wicklow Gap, 30 kilometers from where she was last seen alive, in January 1980. Her last sighting was near Christmas 1979, walking towards a bus stop in Newbridge to travel home to Kildare town.

A DNA breakthrough in 1999 linked Crerar, a former soldier, to the crime. His blood samples from 1980 matched semen found on the victim’s body. Despite the irrefutable evidence, Crerar maintained his innocence until his dying day.

Crerar’s trial was held in 2002, and he was convicted for the horrific crime. He was originally from Co Tipperary but was living in Kildare at the time of the murder. Given the nature of his crime, detectives had previously assessed his movements in connection to other unsolved cases in Leinster.

As recently as last November, Crerar was denied parole, with his next eligibility review scheduled for 2026. However, fate intervened, and the 76-year-old took ill at Arbour Hill Prison last Friday, being transferred to Dublin’s Mater Hospital where he succumbed to his illness on Saturday.

The Irish Prison Service confirmed Crerar’s death, extending sympathies to the families involved. It is understood that Phyllis Murphy’s family is also aware of the convicted murderer’s passing.
