Cooper Hjerpe delivered four perfect innings of relief during his major league debut on Sunday, helping the St. Louis Cardinals secure a 10-8 victory against the Colorado Rockies, according to game reports from the Associated Press.

The left-handed pitcher stepped onto the mound in the third inning after replacing starting pitcher Kyle Leahy. Hjerpe, the 22nd overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft by St. Louis, was recalled from Triple-A Memphis prior to the Sunday matchup. During his four frames of work, the 25-year-old struck out six batters without allowing a baserunner.

According to the Associated Press, Hjerpe earned his first career win to improve to 1-0 on the season. His performance steadied the Cardinals pitching staff after a rocky start from Leahy, who was chased in the third inning following a home run by Mickey Moniak. Leahy, a native of nearby Boulder, Colorado, had allowed two runs or fewer in each of his previous 12 starts before surrendering five earned runs to the Rockies.

Cardinals Offense Fuels Six-Run Fifth Inning

St. Louis mounted a comeback in the fifth frame, highlighted by a go-ahead, two-run home run from Nolan Gorman off Colorado reliever Jimmy Herget. The blast capped a six-run inning for the Cardinals, who took two of three games from the Rockies and have won five of their last six road series.

Iván Herrera contributed significantly to the visiting offense with three hits and two RBIs. Alec Burleson added three hits along with his team-leading 103rd RBI of the season, while Leo Bernal drove in two runs. Bernal’s performance marked his third multi-RBI outing in just six career major league games. George Soriano pitched the ninth inning and struck out Troy Johnston with a runner on second base to collect his third save of the year.

Colorado Batting Performance and Upcoming Series Schedules

Mickey Moniak led the Rockies at the plate by hitting his 22nd home run of the season and driving in four runs. Jake McCarthy added a home run and three RBIs, while TJ Rumfield finished the contest with three hits and an RBI. Jimmy Herget absorbed the loss for Colorado, dropping his record to 0-6 on the year.

Looking ahead to the upcoming schedule, the Cardinals travel to face the San Francisco Giants on Monday. St. Louis right-hander Michael McGreevy, carrying a 6-9 record and a 3.97 ERA, is scheduled to square off against Giants right-hander Logan Webb, who holds an 8-8 record and a 4.21 ERA.

Meanwhile, the Rockies prepare to hit the road for a matchup in New York on Tuesday. Colorado right-hander Gabriel Hughes, seeking his first win at 0-6 with a 6.19 ERA, is slated to pitch against New York Yankees right-hander Cam Schlittler, who enters the contest with a 12-6 record and a 2.04 ERA.
