Cork Man Pleads Guilty to Attempted Murder in Grand parade Case
Cork, Ireland – In a dramatic turn of events, a 31-year-old Cork man facing a murder trial next month has pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the same case. Aaron Babbington, formerly of Churchfield avenue, churchfield, appeared in person at the Central Criminal Court in Cork on Thursday and changed his plea.
Babbington was originally charged with the murder of Jason Butler on june 14, 2023, at Grand Parade in cork. The trial was scheduled to begin on January 13, 2025. Though, following Babbington’s guilty plea to the lesser charge of attempted murder, the murder trial date will be vacated.
Senior Counsel Ray Boland, representing the prosecution, informed the court that a victim impact statement would be required from Butler’s family. Defense Senior Counsel tom Creed requested a probation report on Babbington before sentencing.
Mr. Justice paul Burns adjourned the case until January 20 at the Criminal Courts of justice in dublin for mention.Sentencing is expected to be further adjourned on that date.
Last year, Detective Garda Pat Russell formally arrested Babbington and charged him with murder at Cork District Court. At the time, Babbington made no reply to the charge.The incident,which occured around 7:30 pm on a Wednesday,shocked the community. It was previously alleged that Butler was slashed in the throat during the daylight attack on Grand Parade and tragically died two days later. Butler, originally from Castleredmond in Midleton, County Cork, was well-known in the area.

Babbington, who was residing in Churchfield at the time, appeared at the Central criminal Court in Cork on Thursday and switched his plea to guilty for attempted murder.the original murder charge stemmed from an incident on June 14, 2023, when Butler was fatally injured.
