Costco Plans Major Expansion, Tech Upgrades
Costco is moving forward with meaningful expansion plans, aiming to open more than a dozen new locations in fiscal year 2025. This comes as other major corporations adjust their growth strategies.
CEO Ron Vachris announced plans to launch 27 new warehouses, including three relocations, resulting in 24 net new buildings this fiscal year. The global warehouse count is projected to reach 914 by year’s end, Vachris told analysts.

The fourth quarter will see 10 new Costco locations, including the second warehouse in Sweden, the 20th in South Korea, and the 110th in Canada, according to Vachris. Since early March, Costco has already opened nine warehouses, including a relocation in melbourne, Australia, the 37th in Japan, and seven new U.S. locations.
As of mid-May, Costco operated 905 warehouses worldwide, with 624 in the U.S. and 281 internationally. These warehouses stock approximately 4,000 items and often include gas stations, pharmacies, food courts, optical centers, and tire installation services.
Extended hours at North American gas stations have boosted revenue, with record fuel sales reported in April. Vachris attributed this to expanded hours, new gas station openings, and lower prices at the pump.

Costco is also focused on improving the member experience through technology. The company has been testing “scan & Go” technology at select warehouses, which Vachris said has been accomplished in expediting transactions. The retailer believes digital innovation is crucial for future growth and is investing to enhance the member experience.

In mid-May, Costco partnered with Affirm to offer “buy now, pay later” options for large online purchases. Approved members can pay over time for eligible purchases between $500 and $17,500 made on Costco’s website. Vachris noted the company is pleased with the initial sales results of this offering.
