Global Air Quality Trends:‌ A mixed Bag

A⁤ recent ‍report by IQAir, analyzing data ‍from over 40,000 air quality monitoring⁣ stations across 138 countries, highlights a diverse range of⁤ air ⁤quality trends. while some nations grapple⁤ with worsening ⁣pollution, others have made remarkable ⁤strides in ⁤improving thier air quality.

Countries in Central and‌ Southeast⁤ Asia, along with Eastern and Southern Europe, have shown the most considerable improvements in air quality since before the pandemic.

Mongolia‘s ⁣Remarkable ‌Progress

Mongolia⁣ stands⁢ out as a leader in air‍ quality improvement. Between 2019 and 2024, the ⁣country achieved a reduction of more than 30 micrograms per cubic meter in average annual air ⁣pollution from particles 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller ‍(PM2.5). This places Mongolia at the top of the ⁤list‍ for air quality improvement.

Despite the continued use of coal-burning stoves, especially⁣ during winter, programs aimed ⁤at helping poorer residents switch‌ too electric heating have yielded positive results. This significant ⁣improvement has allowed Mongolia to nearly reach⁢ the WHO interim goal 2 out of 4, bringing them closer to the ultimate target of an‌ average annual PM2.5 ‍pollution level of 5 micrograms per cubic meter⁣ of‍ air.

Indonesia’s Efforts to Combat air Pollution

Indonesia, particularly its capital ‌Jakarta, has long been associated with significant air pollution. however, recent efforts have‌ led⁣ to notable ‍improvements. ⁣While‌ Jakarta ranked as the seventh most polluted capital in the world in the 2023 ⁤IQAir ranking, it dropped to tenth in 2024.

These improvements are attributed to advancements in ‍cooking fuels and enhanced ⁤ pollution controls on ⁣transportation ‍and⁢ industry. Despite these positive steps, Indonesia still narrowly missed⁢ WHO interim goal 1, highlighting the ongoing challenges in ‍achieving cleaner air.

gulf Countries and China Show Promise

Bahrain exemplifies the progress made ⁣by several Gulf countries in addressing ‌air pollution. As the region‌ increasingly regulates fossil fuel use, Bahrain achieved WHO interim goal 1 for the ‍first time in 2024.

China has also ‌demonstrated consistent improvement, ⁣meeting the first WHO target since 2020 and ranking as the 11th most improved ‍country in‍ 2024. However, the situation in India ⁤remains critical. While India’s‍ growth was‌ among the 20 best globally, its pollution levels are considerably higher ‍and still ⁣far from meeting international targets.

Europe’s fight⁢ Against Household Pollution

european nations⁤ such‍ as Kosovo,⁣ Bulgaria, and Greece are⁣ also among the top 10 most improved countries, reaching as ⁤far ‍as⁣ interim goal 3. A significant ⁢contributor to pollution in‌ these⁢ countries is the burning of wood and ‌coal for heating by private households.

This issue was ‍particularly pronounced in 2022, when energy ⁤costs surged following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

India’s Air Pollution Crisis

The World Air Quality ⁤Report 2024 reveals a concerning situation in ⁢India, with the country ⁢ranking among the top 5 most ⁣polluted globally. The report⁤ indicates that 13 of the world’s ⁢20 most polluted cities are located in India.Byrnihat in Assam⁣ is identified as the ‌most polluted city worldwide, while Delhi remains the most polluted capital.

While progress is evident in many⁣ regions, sustained efforts and stricter⁤ regulations are crucial to achieving cleaner air globally.
