French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer have both recently emphasized the need to address the potentially harmful effects of social media algorithms on children. Meta Platforms, facing civil lawsuits alleging harm to youth mental health, has defended its practices, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg stating that the company’s goal is to provide “something useful, not create addiction.”

Data underscores the scale of the issue. A French parliamentary report found that 93% of secondary school students have social media accounts. In the United States, Pew Research Center studies indicate that the majority of teenagers aged 13 to 17 use TikTok and Instagram daily, with one in five reporting near-constant use. This widespread adoption highlights the pervasive influence of these platforms in the lives of young people.

The concerns driving these regulatory efforts are rooted in growing evidence linking intensive smartphone and social media use to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and self-harm among adolescents. The algorithmic nature of these platforms, which personalize content and can create echo chambers, is a particular point of concern. The constant stream of notifications and the addictive design of many apps are linked to sleep disturbances and potential impacts on brain development.

The path forward remains uncertain. While the momentum towards greater regulation is clear, the optimal approach – whether through outright bans, stricter age verification, or enhanced safety features – is still being debated. The challenge for policymakers lies in balancing the need to protect children with the potential benefits of social media connectivity and the rights of young people to access information and participate in online communities. The coming months will likely see further legislative developments and ongoing scrutiny of the tech industry’s response to these evolving concerns.
