Court Rules Wrong IVF Child Must Be Returned to Biological Parents
A court in Israel has ruled that a couple must give up their two-year-old daughter, Sophia, due to a mix-up during an IVF treatment. The wrong embryo was implanted in the mother in 2022.
The mistake occurred when two women receiving treatment arrived at the clinic at the same time and were seen by the doctor in the wrong order. The mix-up was discovered during pregnancy when doctors found that the baby had a genetic disorder.
The couple raising Sophia tried to keep her, even after doctors suggested an abortion due to her serious condition. The mother underwent a risky surgery, and although Sophia was born with heart problems and other issues, the couple raised her for two years.
The biological parents of Sophia celebrated the court’s decision, stating it corrected the error from the IVF clinic. They expressed their joy at finally being able to raise the child they believed was meant to be theirs.
The judge noted that biological parents are usually best suited to raise their own children, citing reasons such as the child’s identity and connection to family history. Despite the ruling, the couple who raised Sophia has appealed the decision, emphasizing their deep bond with her.
They feel strongly about their role as her parents, highlighting the love and care they have provided since her birth. An expert witness had argued that keeping Sophia with her current parents would be best for her well-being.
The situation remains tense as both sets of parents seek to establish their claims over Sophia.
