Concerns Raised About Decision-Making Process
Following a postponed vote regarding Hepatitis B vaccine recommendations, several liaison members representing leading medical organizations expressed support for maintaining the current guidelines. They also called for increased transparency in the committee’s future decision-making processes regarding potential changes to vaccine recommendations.
Dr. Amy Middleman, liaison for the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine, emphasized the importance of a methodical, scientific approach to evaluating the risks and benefits of all vaccine decisions. She voiced concern that this approach appeared to be lacking in the current deliberations.
disagreement Over Evidence Standards
ACIP member Retsef Levi acknowledged the desire for a scientific approach but challenged the assertion that it was being consistently applied. He pointed out what he perceived as a reliance on confidence without the backing of robust, long-term clinical trials against placebos-the “gold standard” of evidence.
Levi has consistently advocated for more extensive research beyond the data currently presented by the Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) during committee meetings.
Accusations of Silencing and Calls for Public Trust
As the committee chair attempted to move the discussion forward, Dr. Jason Goldman, president of the American College of Physicians, interrupted to request further clarification and to protest being muted during the meeting. He characterized the muting as “disrespectful” and counterproductive to open debate.
Goldman directly appealed to the committee to publicly outline the process it will use to thoroughly evaluate future vaccine decisions. He argued that transparency is crucial for maintaining public trust and confidence in vaccination programs.
Chair Responds, Moves On
ACIP chair Kulldorff briefly responded that he had already addressed Dr. Goldman’s concerns before proceeding to the next item on the agenda.
