Spain’s INE Advances CPI Base Change to 2026, Reviews Consumer Basket
Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) will advance its next change to the base year for the
consumer price index (CPI) to January 2026, according to Deputy Director General Ignacio
González Veiga. this adjustment, initially slated for 2027,will also prompt a revision of the weights and
items within the standard consumer basket.
The INE typically updates its CPI base every five years, with the last update occurring in 2022. However, the
European Union’s mandate to incorporate the new United Nations Consumption Classification into the Harmonized CPI
(IPCA) by january 2026 has accelerated the timeline. while the EU requirement strictly applies to the IPCA, the
INE plans to align both the national CPI and IPCA to avoid user confusion, González Veiga said.
