Egg Import Investigation: Officials and Companies Face Questioning
(Central News Agency reporter Xie Xing’en, Taipei, 25) An investigation into the case of eggs imported from Chaoxi and Liangkai led to interviews with staff from the Animal Industry Association, Ministry of Agriculture, and Chaoxi and Liangkai companies. Qin Yuqiao, the man in charge of Chaosi, and Chen Zhongjing, former Animal Industry Association CEO and current deputy director of the Ministry of Agriculture, were transferred to the Beijing Inspection and Quarantine Bureau for further questioning this morning.
Qin Yuqiao addressed the media, stating that he could provide clarification on the matter if needed.
According to the Supervisory Yuan’s report, the Central Animal Industry Council managed the emergency dispatch and production and marketing plan for eggs in the Republic of China from March to May. The council contracted Liangkai Company to import Japanese eggs, which were later purchased from Chaosi through a “spot purchase” in November.
The Animal Industry Association appointed Wu Yufei, a Japanese trade agent and food company representative, to designate his daughter as the Taiwanese importer for the Japanese eggs. Kaosi Company was established to handle the business of importing Japanese eggs from Chaosi.
The Supervisory Yuan believes that the Animal Industry Association cooperated with Chaosi to buy Japanese eggs before the company was registered, failing to inspect the quantity and quality of the imported eggs. The association also backfilled the “contract performance status” confirmation letter to verify the purchase amount.
Based on the investigation report and other documents, the prosecutor suspects that the civil servants involved in the case, along with Chaoxi and Liangkai Company, are guilty of profiteering and fraud in violation of the Criminal Law Corruption Offenses Ordinance.
The Taipei District Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into Chaosi, Liangkai Company, and other locations, interviewing Qin Yuqiao and Chen Zhongjing, among others.
