The U.S. Geological Survey has identified 50 minerals as critical to the nation’s economy and security. The Department of Energy is focused on 18 materials vital for energy, including copper, cobalt, gallium, and neodymium. These materials are crucial for transmission lines, batteries, LEDs, and motors.
Governments worldwide are concerned about potential bottlenecks in the supply of these minerals. Restrictions, price increases, or growing demand could disrupt industries and hinder climate change mitigation efforts.These minerals are essential for clean energy technologies like solar panels, batteries, and electric motors.
The International Energy agency projects that mineral demands from clean energy deployment could double or quadruple by 2040.Though, these minerals are not evenly distributed globally, potentially burdening some countries with environmental costs while others reap economic benefits.
“A world powered by renewables is a world hungry for critical minerals,” said UN Secretary-General antónio Guterres at a panel last year. “For developing countries, critical minerals are a critical possibility — to create jobs, diversify economies, and dramatically boost revenues. But only if they are managed properly.”
