People who have difficulty finding time every day during the week due to work or child care may choose to exercise on the weekends. Studies have shown that people who exercise intensively on one or two days a week or on the weekends can obtain just as many health benefits as those who exercise regularly multiple times. Among these, research results were recently published showing that exercising heavily on weekends can lower the risk of developing 264 diseases in the future.

According to this study, led by researchers at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, exercising on the weekends was found to have potential benefits in reducing the risk of various diseases, just as an exercise pattern spread evenly throughout the week.

In general, at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week is recommended for adults. The researchers wanted to find out whether people who met these recommendations and exercised for 20 to 30 minutes several times a week would benefit more than those who exercised on one or two days, five to six days apart.

For this purpose, the researchers analyzed information on 89,573 study participants from the UK Biobank. Information collected about the time the participants exercised at various intensities and the total amount of physical activity through the accelerometer worn on their wrists for a week was collected, and based on the recommended exercise guidelines, they were divided into △exercise on weekends, △exercise regularly, and △inactive. Sorted. They then analyzed the association between physical activity patterns and the incidence of 678 diseases across 16 types.

As a result, the group that exercised on weekends and the group that exercised regularly had a significantly lower risk of more than 200 diseases compared to the inactive group. Among them, the strongest association was observed for cardiometabolic diseases such as high blood pressure (23% and 28% lower risk in the weekend group and regular exercise group, respectively, over an average of 6 years) and diabetes (43% and 46%, respectively).

“This study shows that a weekend exercise pattern has potential benefits not only for cardiovascular disease but also for a wide range of diseases, from chronic diseases to mood disorders,” said study author Shaan Khurshid, MD, of the Arrhythmia Center at Massachusetts General Hospital. “Given that the benefits of intensive weekend exercise and regular exercise appear to be similar, it may be the total amount of activity rather than the exercise pattern that is most important.” “Future interventions that test the effectiveness of focused activity are needed to improve public health, and patients should be encouraged to engage in guideline-compliant physical activity in the pattern that works best for them,” he added.

The results of this study were published in the cardiology journal Circulation under the title ‘Associations of “Weekend Warrior” Physical Activity With Incident Disease and Cardiometabolic Health.’
