Crypto Coup: US Authorities Reclaim $193,000 in Stolen Digital Currency After Daring Hack
US Government Recovers $200,000 in Stolen Cryptocurrency
A wallet linked to the U.S. government has successfully recovered $200,000 of the $193,000 lost in a recent security breach, accounting for approximately 88% of the stolen assets.
The swift recovery took place within 24 hours of the incident, according to cryptocurrency analysis firm Arkham.
Security Breach Details
The security breach occurred on April 24, resulting in the unauthorized movement of funds totaling over $14 million. This included $14 million AUSDC, $5.4 million USDT, $1.1 million USDT, and $500,000 ETH.
The suspicious account identified as 0xc9E has been linked to an address cited in the infamous Bitfinex hacking court documents.
Investigation and Analysis
Cryptocurrency analysts, including Zach, have been investigating the incident. The stolen funds had been dormant for over a month before the breach and were linked to funds seized by the government following the 2016 Bitfinex hack, in which approximately 120,000 BTC was stolen.
To cover their tracks, the attackers began sending funds to various addresses, transferring $55,000 to address 0x15D0a and $14,000 to address 0xBf6F7.
Comparison to the 2016 Bitfinex Hack
The incident bears resemblance to the infamous 2016 Bitfinex hack, where initially $650,000 worth of cryptocurrency was stolen, but its value later swelled to over $400 million by the time it was seized by authorities. The seized funds will be returned to Bitfinex, but questions remain about security vulnerabilities if the U.S. Marshals Service’s status was indeed breached.
An Unusual Twist
Interestingly, cryptocurrency user typicaldoomer.eth sent 69 NOCHILL tokens to suspected hackers just hours after the breach occurred. This highlights the unpredictable nature of the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
