CTA Unions Protest Against Austerity Measures in Argentina
Workers Across Argentina Unite Against hunger and Austerity
Buenos Aires,Argentina – Thousands of Argentinians took to the streets Thursday in a nationwide protest against the government’s economic policies, which they say are exacerbating hunger and poverty. The “Federal Day of Struggle Against Hunger,” organized by the two main branches of the General Confederation of Labor (CTA) – the Workers’ CTA and the Autonomous CTA – saw workers, unions, and social organizations converge on Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, demanding an end to what they call “austerity measures” and “national plunder.”
The massive presentation, which began in the morning with marches from various points in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA),culminated in a rally at Plaza de mayo at 1 p.m. under the banner “The Homeland is Not For Sale.”
“We are living in a time when, despite what the government and the financial corporations supporting them say, indigence and hunger are on the rise in Argentina,” declared Hugo Yasky, secretary general of the Workers’ CTA. “We are approaching the end of the year with an unprecedented drop in meat consumption, a clear indicator of the economic hardship faced by many Argentinians.”
Hugo Godoy, secretary general of the Autonomous CTA, echoed Yasky’s concerns, emphasizing the need to “firmly demand a nation without hunger in the face of this government of looting and surrender.” he also highlighted the march’s solidarity with “various chambers of yerba mate producers and peasant movements suffering from the suffocation of regional economies.”
The Association of State Workers (ATE) also joined the strike, stating that “this year has been terrible for state employees” and that the mobilization was an opportunity to “demonstrate that the unity of the working class yields results.”
The massive turnout and the strong message sent by the protesters underscore the growing discontent with the government’s economic policies and the urgent need for solutions to address the rising tide of hunger and poverty in Argentina.
