Charlie Curnow kicked seven goals as Sydney proved too strong in a 66-point win over the Western Bulldogs.
The Sydney Swans defeated the Western Bulldogs 18.18 (126) to 9.6 (60) at Marvel Stadium on Thursday evening, consolidating their position at the top of the AFL ladder.
Curnow marked everything in his vicinity, delivering a season-best performance that included a super three-goal term in the second quarter. His dominance up forward was mirrored by a dreadful fall for Bulldogs star forward Aaron Naughton, who was stretchered off the ground after landing on his neck in the third quarter.
Where Curnow was the biggest aerial threat, Tom Papley proved to be the connector, recording seven inside 50s and 10 score involvements despite his own attempts to convert being uncharacteristically ugly. Papley buzzed around at ground level, setting up teammates and helping the Swans move the ball effectively through the corridor.
The Swans started sloppily, sending handballs high on transition and opening up teammates to become victims of the Bulldogs’ desperate pressure. The home side equalised the contest through pure physicality in the early stages, an area where the young and inexperienced Bulldogs excelled through endeavour and effort.
However, when things clicked for Sydney, they scored heavily. Quick ball movement through the corridor, hitting up the tall duo of Curnow and Joel Amartey, made life tough for a Bulldogs defence missing important players James O’Donnell and Rory Lobb due to injury.
The Bulldogs’ injury woes continued to mount, with Naughton’s nasty fall adding to a growing list of absences. Despite the setback, the club remained optimistic that he had avoided serious injury.
The victory strengthened Sydney’s hold on top spot in the AFL Premiership Season, marking their third consecutive win and further highlighting the Bulldogs’ struggles amid ongoing injury concerns.
