Nearly every Cypriot is connected to the internet, with usage rates soaring among younger generations, according to a new survey.
The 2024 survey on household use of information and dialog technologies, conducted by the statistical service, revealed that a staggering 95% of Cypriots use the internet at least once a week.This digital penetration is particularly high among young people, with a near-universal 99.9% of those aged 16 to 24 regularly going online.
While internet usage remains consistently high across most demographics, a slight decline is observed with age.For those aged 55 to 74, the figure dips to 83.3%. Education level also plays a role, with 99.6% of individuals with higher education reporting frequent internet use compared to 76.8% of those with lower levels of education.
Texting, Calling, and Shopping: How Cypriots Use the Internet
The survey shed light on the most popular online activities among Cypriots. texting through platforms like Skype, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Viber reigns supreme. Internet calling comes in second, followed closely by searching for information about products or services, an activity engaged in by 94.3% of users.
Social networking remains a major draw, with 91.8% of Cypriots active on platforms like Facebook. Watching videos on sharing services is also incredibly popular, with 91.3% of respondents participating.
Interestingly,around 10% of respondents reported using the internet for educational purposes,including attending online classes or communicating with teachers.
Government Services Go Digital
the survey also highlighted the growing trend of Cypriots interacting with government services online. Between april 2023 and March 2024, 70.6% of people aged 16 to 74 accessed information from government services online.
Furthermore,54% retrieved personal information stored by public authorities,while 22.8% accessed information from public databases.
Online Shopping on the Rise
Perhaps unsurprisingly, online shopping is experiencing a boom in Cyprus. In 2024, 63.6% of respondents reported making purchases online, a significant jump from 55.3% in the previous year.

This trend is further emphasized by 54% retrieving personal information stored by public authorities and 22.8% accessing information from public databases.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, online shopping is booming in Cyprus. The survey reveals a significant jump from 55.3% in the previous year to 63.6% of respondents making online purchases in 2024.

However, we must also address the digital divide, ensuring equitable access and digital literacy for all segments of the population.”
