The image showcases the celestial spectacle of the Geminid meteor shower, which peaks in mid-December.Over two dozen meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Gemini, the centerpiece of the photograph. the scene is bathed in the ethereal glow of a nearly full moon, adding an extra layer of magic to the winter wonderland.
“I had to carefully plan this shot, considering the position of the celestial bodies,” Kuřák explained. “Sadly, inversions over the Czech Republic forced me to relocate to Poland for clearer skies.”
Kuřák’s stunning photograph is the seventh from a Czech photographer to be featured as APOD this year. Other notable Czech contributions include Pavel gabzdyl’s image of a sunset over Brno’s Festival of Planets and Petr Horálek’s captivating shots of a partially eclipsed full moon over Spiš Castle.
Capturing such celestial beauty comes with its challenges, especially during the winter months.”The conditions can be quite harsh, with temperatures often below freezing,” Kuřák shared. ”It’s physically demanding, and the cold can also affect the equipment, from draining batteries to freezing lenses.”
Despite the difficulties, Kuřák’s dedication and artistry have earned him a place among the world’s most celebrated astrophotographers. Being selected for APOD, a prestigious honor bestowed by NASA since 1995, is a testament to his talent and passion.
“I never imagined my photo woudl be chosen,” Kuřák admitted. “It’s an amazing honor to be featured alongside thousands of talented photographers from around the globe.”
