Taco Trucks Targeted in Recent Robberies Across Southern California and Texas
Taco trucks, beloved staples of communities across the country, have been the target of increasingly brazen robberies in recent months. From a large-scale assault in Los Angeles to repeated incidents in Bellflower and a break-in in Dallas, owners and employees are expressing concern over the safety of their businesses and the rising cost of operating in the current economic climate.
One of the most alarming incidents occurred on , when Tacos Los Poblanos, a Tijuana-style taco truck located at
5821 South Avalon Boulevard in Los Angeles, was attacked by a group of approximately 30 men around according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The incident, caught on video and reportedly live-streamed by the perpetrators, left 13 staff members assaulted, with one requiring hospitalization for abrasions and a laceration. The LAPD confirmed they are investigating the incident and identified the suspects as “male Hispanic” individuals.
Investigators have linked the attack to fans of the Cruz Azul soccer team, with multiple suspects reportedly wearing Cruz Azul jerseys, including one with “Cruz Azul Las Vegas 702” printed on it. The incident occurred shortly after Cruz Azul defeated the L.A. Galaxy in a multi-league tournament held in Carson, California. L.A. TACO reported that the taco truck, a fixture in South Central Los Angeles for nearly 15 years, had never experienced an incident of this magnitude.
Further south in California, Tacos La Rueda in Bellflower has been repeatedly targeted. On , thieves ran off with the entire cash register in a brazen daytime heist. This was the third time the restaurant had been robbed in the past year, according to NBC Los Angeles. Video footage captured the theft, showing two individuals fleeing with the register. The owner, Alan Cejuda, expressed frustration over the repeated incidents, stating, “We come, work every day, open our doors and try to analyze the cost…For this to happen, it breaks our heart.” He cited the high cost of living and rising meat prices as additional burdens on small businesses.
The robberies aren’t limited to California. In Dallas, Texas, Tacos Juancho, located at
3604 Oak Lawn Ave, recently experienced a break-in at their safe, though details surrounding the incident are limited. Tacos Juancho is currently open from to on Fridays, according to Yelp.
These incidents highlight a growing concern for small business owners, particularly those operating in the food service industry. While authorities are investigating, the repeated targeting of these establishments raises questions about security measures and the challenges faced by entrepreneurs in maintaining safe and profitable businesses.
