Damien Duff has resigned as manager of Shelbourne FC, concluding a three-and-a-half-year stint at Tolka Park. The former Ireland international’s leadership saw the club secure a Premier Division title and return to European competition,forging a strong bond between the team and its fans.
Duff’s journey with Shelbourne began in November 2021. He admitted to initial hesitation about taking his first senior management role, but a moment with his son, sporting a Shelbourne jersey, swayed his decision.
“Am I scared? Absolutely… But I’ve been preaching to kids about courage. For me to say no on Friday, I was lacking that,” Duff said upon his appointment.
In October 2022,Duff guided Shelbourne to their first FAI Cup final since 2011. Following a win against Waterford, he called it one of his proudest moments. However, he also criticized the League of Ireland’s scheduling of Monday night games.
“F***ing hell, it’s ridiculous.I hate that mentality,” Duff said regarding the scheduling.
While the cup final ended in a 4-0 defeat to Derry City, Duff remained supportive of his team. In June 2023, turkish media mogul Acun Ilicali became the majority shareholder. Duff remained focused on the team’s culture.
November 2023 saw Shelbourne secure a spot in European football for the first time in 18 years. Despite Ilicali stepping away from ownership,Duff signed a new deal,reaffirming his commitment to Shelbourne.
“Shelbourne FC is a Dublin institution… built on hard work, respect, humility and honesty,” Duff stated.
Duff’s connection with the fans was highlighted in April 2024 when he invited supporter Ciaran Harmon to address the team after a derby win. Despite being linked to the Ireland senior job, Duff ruled himself out in May 2024.
“No, it would drive me insane… There’s nothing better than being with the players every day,” Duff explained.
