Dangers of Bus Surfing: Recent Social Media Posts Spark Concern

Recently, a case of ‘bus surfing’, where people climb on the roof of a bus operating in New York, USA and take a test photo, has been caught.

According to the New York Post on the 28th (local time), a video allegedly shot from the roof of an articulated bus running in downtown Manhattan was recently posted on Instagram. The photographer also took a picture of himself sitting on the roof of the bus and stretching his legs.

Last February, a dangerous image of a boy jumping onto the roof of a moving bus was posted. In the video, the boy who was wearing a black hood jumped and jumped on the roof of the bus, or stood on the roof and barely avoided going under the power lines.

Some say that bus surfing is more dangerous than subway surfing, which was popular before. Mustafa Sawane, a bus driver with 6 years of experience, said, “You can tell what will happen in the subway that runs along the tracks, but it’s hard to predict for buses.” “The risk of death is higher,” he said.

Bus drivers estimated that these surfers used their breaks or the 30 second signal waiting time to climb to the roof. One driver said, “I think we need to check the top of the bus before leaving,” and “Unless someone tells us, we can’t tell from the driver’s seat if there are unauthorized passengers on the bus.”

In the United States, the challenge of climbing on top of the subway roof and taking a test photo became popular, leading to a series of casualties. Last January, a 14-year-old boy fell to his death while riding the subway, and last year, at least five teenagers died while surfing the subway. In the first half of last year alone, 450 cases of subway surfing were reported, a sharp increase compared to 262 cases in the same period in 2019.

Accordingly, local governments and transport authorities are asking for the cooperation of social media to block or remove posts related to surfing on public transport.
