Washington D.C. Boasts a lush, humid tropical rainforest within the U.S. Botanic Garden, alongside other spectacular displays. The garden is currently hosting “America’s State Flowers: An America250 Celebration,” showcasing the official flowers of each U.S. State and territory through living plants, artistic displays, botanical illustrations, and herbarium specimens. The exhibit, running from April 10, 2026, to October 12, 2026, features a diverse range of floral beauty, including magnolias, roses, orchids, bluebonnets, and saguaro cactus flowers.

The U.S. Botanic Garden, founded by Congress in 1820, aims to educate and inspire the public to become stewards of plants. It remains free and open year-round, offering diverse collections ranging from a rainforest canopy to delicate orchids and the famously pungent corpse flower. Visitors can explore climate-controlled conservatory rooms and participate in educational activities.

Fierce Flora Exhibit Highlights Plant Survival Strategies

Currently, the garden also features “Fierce Flora: Tales of Survival and Demise,” a multisensory exhibit exploring the defensive mechanisms plants have evolved against herbivores, infection, and competition. The exhibit details how plants have engaged in a millennia-long evolutionary struggle, sometimes with negative consequences for humans who touch, consume, or even sit beneath them. However, the exhibit also notes that some of the chemicals causing harm can be used for medicinal purposes, with over half of pharmaceutical drugs originally derived from plants.
