Wizards of the Coast has released a new Unearthed Arcana playtest titled “Villainous Options 2,” introducing three new subclasses designed for players interested in exploring darker or antiheroic character concepts. The playtest, available on D&D Beyond, features the Path of Lament for barbarians, Warrior of Venom for monks, and Primordial Patron for warlocks. These subclasses continue the theme from a previous Unearthed Arcana release that focused on villainous options, including mechanics for becoming a death knight or lich.
The Path of Lament barbarian subclass centers on channeling grief and loss into rage, drawing inspiration from incorporeal undead such as banshees. A key feature is Banshee’s Wail, which allows the barbarian to emit a painful scream that deals psychic damage in an area of effect. This ability scales with the barbarian’s rage bonus and can be used to avoid harming allies. The subclass also grants access to the speak with dead spell, offering utility outside of combat for a class that often lacks non-combat roles. By level 6, Path of Lament barbarians can attempt to frighten a target once per turn as part of an attack, adding a layer of crowd control to their kit.
The Warrior of Venom monk subclass enables characters to harness toxic substances as part of their martial arts discipline. This includes the ability to exude bodily fluids that can act as hallucinogens or truth serums. A distinctive mechanic involves the Bloodied condition: when the monk takes melee damage, their blood can splash onto the attacker, similar to the Xenomorph creatures from the Alien franchise. This feature provides a reactive damage option that triggers when the monk is struck in close combat. The subclass emphasizes close-quarters danger and biochemical warfare, aligning with themes of venomous predators and toxic environments.
The Primordial Patron warlock subclass represents a pact with destructive natural forces, particularly drawing from the concept of Elemental Evils in Dungeons & Dragons lore. Rather than serving a traditional deity or fiend, the warlock gains power through an alliance with primordial entities associated with elemental catastrophe, such as living storms, sentient wildfires, or seismic horrors. This patron offers access to spells and invocations tied to elemental destruction, positioning the warlock as a conduit for primal chaos rather than personal power. The subclass reflects a shift toward environmental horror and uncontrolled natural power as sources of magical ability.
All three subclasses are presented as playtest material, meaning the mechanics and features are subject to change based on community feedback. Wizards of the Coast encourages players to submit feedback through an official survey, which opened on April 30, 2026. The design team emphasized that the goal of these options is to allow players to explore antiheroic or sinister character concepts while remaining compatible with any alignment, though they recommend discussing such themes with a dungeon master to ensure group comfort. The Unearthed Arcana series continues to serve as a platform for experimental rules, with past installments influencing official releases in sources like Xanathar’s Guide to Everything.
