De-communication and 5G even growth… Mobile operator’s 2Q earnings also ‘smooth’

It was found that the three telecommunication companies cruised through the second quarter, showing even growth in both the post-communication and telecommunication businesses.

First, KT announced on the 10th that it recorded 6.27 trillion won in sales and 475.8 billion won in operating profit on a consolidated basis in the second quarter. This is an increase of 151.1 billion won (2.6%) and 132.3 billion won (38.5%), respectively, compared to last year, recording an earnings surprise as operating profit increased significantly.

The main growth engines were analyzed to be the expansion of high-quality subscribers in platform businesses such as artificial intelligence (AI)/digital transformation (DX), media and content, and existing flagship businesses such as 5G and high-speed Internet.

Corporate line sales increased by 4.2% compared to the same period of the previous year as traffic increased due to the expansion of non-face-to-face business by companies. The cloud business also led KT’s sales growth by increasing orders in the public and financial sectors, up 6.2% from the same period last year.

The IPTV business surpassed 9 million subscribers for the first time in Korea in June, and its sales in the second quarter recorded 466.6 billion won, an increase of 14.5% compared to the same period of the previous year. In addition, Olleh TV Tab, which was launched in May, is rapidly expanding its subscriber base thanks to the growing need for homeschooling.

The number of postpaid wireless subscribers, including 5G subscribers, increased by more than 530,000 in the first half of the year, and wireless sales in the second quarter recorded 1.788.5 trillion won, an increase of 3.8% from the same period last year.

Wireless service revenue grew 4.5% year-over-year. As of the end of 2Q, the cumulative number of 5G subscribers stood at 5.01 million, accounting for 35% of post-paid mobile phone subscribers.

High-speed Internet sales increased by 2.1% year-on-year to KRW 507.4 billion thanks to the increase in subscribers. Fixed-line phone sales declined 1.6% year-on-year, continuing the slowdown.

The group companies also saw growth in sales through fundamental business competitiveness. Contents group companies’ sales increased by 16.3% compared to the same period of the previous year, showing great results, and BC Card’s sales improved by 4.6% compared to the same period of the previous year due to an increase in domestic purchases.

SK Telecom also announced on the 11th that it recorded 4,818.3 billion won in sales and 396.6 billion won in operating profit in the second quarter, showing growth in all businesses including new businesses and mobile communication. This is an increase of 4.7% and 10.8%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

New ICT sales recorded 1.57 trillion won, up 10.1% from the same period last year, recording double-digit growth for the fifth consecutive quarter. The proportion of total sales remained in the 31-32% range.

The mobile communication business recorded 3,216 billion won in sales, an increase of 2.7% compared to the same period of the previous year due to the expansion of 5G subscribers.

The media business continued its growth, with sales of KRW 997.1 billion, an increase of 8.7% compared to the same period of the previous year, and operating profit of KRW 64.2 billion, an increase of 4.9%, thanks to the effect of a net increase in IPTV subscribers.

SK Broadband achieved the first place in the net increase in IPTV subscribers in the first half, and as of the end of the second quarter, the number of pay-TV subscribers also expanded to 8.81 million.

The S&C business (convergence security) recorded 369.8 billion won in sales, a 14.5% increase compared to the same period last year, thanks to the strong growth of unmanned security and information security as well as the high growth of new businesses based on technology differentiation.

The commerce business recorded 211 billion won in sales, a 9.6% increase compared to the same period last year, thanks to efforts to grow the e-commerce market and differentiate delivery services.

As of the end of June, SKT 5G subscribers stood at 7.7 million, an increase of 960,000 from the previous quarter (end of March), taking the first place among mobile carriers.

The mobile communication business recorded 328.4 billion won in sales and 21.7% in operating profit, up 2.7% from the same period last year, thanks to the expansion of 5G subscribers, the development of customer-friendly products, and cost stabilization.

LG U+ announced on the 6th that it recorded 3.34 trillion won in sales and 268.4 billion won in operating profit in the second quarter. This is an increase of 12% and 2.2% compared to the same period last year.

LG U+ said that its corporate infrastructure business, including new businesses, drove its earnings improvement.

Sales of corporate infrastructure businesses, including new businesses and line businesses for companies, recorded 388.8 billion won, up 12.7% from the previous year.

In the second quarter, revenue from the wireless business increased by 5.7% compared to the same period of the previous year to KRW 1.5 trillion thanks to an increase in 5G subscribers and an increase in MVNO subscribers. Wireless service revenue, excluding connection revenue, was KRW 1.41 trillion, up 5% from the previous year.

The total number of wireless subscribers, including mobile communication and budget phones, was 17,198,000, up 8.4% from the same period last year.

Although the number of mobile phone subscribers decreased slightly due to the termination of 2G, the number of 5G subscribers increased by 108.8% year-on-year to 3,727,000.

The number of discount phone subscribers also increased sharply, reaching 2,357,000 people, up 79.4% from the previous year.

The smart home business, including IPTV and high-speed Internet, recorded 538.7 billion won in sales, an increase of 8.9% compared to the same period last year, thanks to the increase in subscribers.

IPTV business sales reached 303.9 billion won, an increase of 8.4% compared to the same period last year.

Broadband Internet revenue was 234.8 billion won, up 9.6% from the same period last year. The number of subscribers increased by 5.1% from the previous year to 4,637,000, and the proportion of giga Internet subscribers was 68%, up 7.5 percentage points from the same period last year, leading to the increase in earnings.
