‘Very Serious Incident’ Prompts Large Emergency Response at De Montfort University
– A large-scale emergency response unfolded at De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester on Tuesday evening, February 3, following what authorities are describing as a “very serious incident.” Multiple police cordons were established, and both Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and DMU security personnel were deployed to the scene.
The incident occurred on Oxford Street, near The Innovation Centre, part of the university campus. Leicestershire Police closed the road at the junction with Grange Lane as officers began their investigation. According to reports, traffic was also affected on Carlton Street, and access to Infirmary Square was restricted.
DMU released a statement acknowledging the situation. “We are aware of a very serious incident on our campus this evening,” a university spokesperson said. “We are working with Leicestershire Police as they launch an immediate investigation. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by what has happened. We are offering direct support to students and staff who witnessed the incident.”

Around four police cars were initially at the scene, alongside seven officers managing the cordons and conducting inquiries. Traffic control reported that all inbound traffic on Oxford Street was being diverted outbound at the Granby Halls/Voco Hotel corner. Carlton Street was also shut at Welford Road.
