Two Dead in I-26 Crash Near Charleston
CHARLESTON, S.C. — A crash on Interstate 26 eastbound near Charleston early Monday morning resulted in the deaths of two people, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred just before near the Cosgrove Avenue exit at approximately mile marker 216, Cpl. Nick Pye of the SCHP stated.
Investigators determined that a 2019 Volkswagen was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when it collided with a 2008 Chevrolet SUV traveling eastbound. The driver of the Volkswagen sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital, where they later died.
The driver and a passenger in the Chevrolet SUV were also injured and taken to a hospital. Sadly, the SUV passenger succumbed to their injuries, according to authorities.
As of Monday, February 2, 2026, the Charleston County Coroner’s Office had not released the identities of the deceased individuals.
The crash initially closed a portion of I-26 westbound, but the roadway has since reopened.
The South Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating a separate, fatal construction accident that occurred on I-26 in North Charleston, but this incident is unrelated to the Monday morning vehicle collision.
In a separate case from 2021, a man was recently sentenced to a 10-year prison term for fleeing the scene of a deadly high-speed crash on I-26. Prosecutors revealed that the man was traveling at 139 mph when the crash occurred and that his 911 call was not to report the accident. Another man was sentenced to prison in 2021 for a similar offense, leaving the scene of a deadly I-26 crash.
