At least four people were killed and dozens injured on Monday when two trains collided outside Indonesia’s capital Jakarta, triggering a mass evacuation effort and chaotic rescue operations at the scene, officials said.

The crash occurred late in the evening at Bekasi Timur station, approximately 25 kilometers (15 miles) east of Jakarta in West Java province. The collision involved a commuter train and a long-distance train, according to statements from Indonesia’s state-owned rail operator, Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI).

Chaotic rescue efforts

An Agence France-Presse (AFP) reporter at the scene described harrowing conditions as emergency responders scrambled to assist victims. Rescuers shouted for oxygen tanks while ambulances lined up in a snaking queue, their lights flashing as medical teams worked to evacuate the wounded. Photos from the site showed damaged train carriages with buckled windows and shattered panelling, while bystanders and emergency personnel carried victims out on stretchers.

KAI spokeswoman Anne Purba confirmed that at least four people had died and more than 30 were hospitalized. Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad warned that the death toll could rise as the evacuation continued. “Judging from the evacuation process that is still underway, the number of victims may continue to rise,” he told reporters.

KAI spokesman Franoto Wibowo told local broadcaster Kompas TV that rescuing passengers was the company’s top priority. “As for the victims, we have made every effort to evacuate them as quickly as possible to the nearest hospitals,” he said. “We are still in the process of collecting data and evidence… The detailed chronology of the cause will be delivered later by the authorized authorities.”

Cause under investigation

Jakarta police chief Asep Edi Suheri said the collision occurred when a long-distance train crashed into the last carriage of a commuter train, which was reportedly a women-only compartment. Most of the victims were in that carriage and rescuers had to cut into the wreckage to free trapped passengers.

According to Franoto Wibowo, preliminary reports suggested that a taxi had clipped the commuter train at a level crossing, causing it to stall on the tracks. However, authorities have not confirmed this account, and an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

Dozens of emergency workers, including personnel from the military, fire brigade, national search and rescue agency, and the Red Cross, were deployed to the scene. The Indonesian government has not yet issued a formal statement on the incident, but local officials have pledged a full investigation into the circumstances leading to the collision.

Indonesia’s rail safety record

Indonesia’s rail network has faced criticism in the past over safety concerns, including aging infrastructure and inadequate signaling systems. The last major train crash in the country occurred in January 2024 in West Java province, when a collision killed four people and injured around two dozen others. That incident also involved a commuter train and raised questions about rail safety standards in the region.

While Monday’s crash is not the deadliest in Indonesia’s recent history—an accident in 2013 near Jakarta killed 10 people and injured around 80—it has renewed calls for improved safety measures on the country’s railways. KAI has not yet released a statement on whether systemic issues contributed to the latest disaster.

For now, authorities are focused on accounting for all passengers and providing medical care to the injured. The Indonesian government has not announced any immediate policy changes in response to the crash, but the incident is likely to reignite debates over transportation safety in one of Southeast Asia’s most densely populated regions.
