US Presidential Debate: Harris Proposes Second Debate After Dominant Performance
The first TV debate between US presidential candidates Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump has been evaluated as one in which Vice President Harris had the upper hand. In response, Vice President Harris immediately proposed a second debate.
American media outlets, including The Washington Post, reported that Vice President Harris’s election campaign proposed a second debate to former President Trump’s camp.
“The American people saw a choice they would face at the polls this fall: whether to move forward with Harris or to move back with Trump,” Harris’ campaign chair Jen O’Malley said in a statement released shortly after the debate.
He then asked, “Vice President Harris is ready for a second debate,” and “Is Donald Trump ready?”
Former President Trump avoided giving a direct answer to this suggestion, saying, “I’ll think about it.”
Former President Trump told reporters immediately after the debate that “Vice President Harris immediately suggested a second debate because she lost so badly tonight.”
In a subsequent press interview, he also expressed skepticism about a second debate, saying, “I think we probably shouldn’t have one.”
Former President Trump previously suggested holding two more debates in September, hosted by Fox News, NBC, and ABC News, but Vice President Harris at the time insisted on holding only one debate in October.
According to a CNN poll, 63% of voters who watched the debate said that Vice President Harris did better, while only 37% said that former President Trump did better.
This is a contrast to the June debate between President Joe Biden and former President Trump, where 67% of voters said that “former President Trump did a better job debating.”
