Slowing Down: The Opening Speed of Plastic Surgery Clinics
Despite the mass resignation of residents and the resulting ‘medical vacuum’, the sales of domestic plastic surgery clinics continue to increase. According to data from the National Health Insurance Corporation, the sales of plastic surgery clinics as of July this year amounted to 37.8 billion won, equivalent to 73.7% of the total sales of 51.3 billion won last year.
Plastic surgery clinics’ sales have been steadily increasing. In 2021, it recorded 37 billion won, a 58% increase from the previous year (23.4 billion won). Last year’s sales were almost 2.6 times that of 2019 (19.8 billion won).

However, the opening of plastic surgery clinics is slowing down. The number of plastic surgery clinics increased by 5.0% from 1,011 in 2019 to 1,062 the following year. However, the growth rate has steadily decreased since 2021. As of July this year, the number of plastic surgery clinics has increased by 16 from a year ago to 1,183.
Rep. Kim Mi-ae emphasized, “The Ministry of Health and Welfare and other relevant authorities should analyze the fundamental causes of the increase in the number and sales of plastic surgery clinics even amid the COVID-19 pandemic and medical crisis and include them in detailed policies for medical reform.”
