Dell Technologies and Microsoft launched laptops powered by NVIDIA’s RTX Spark superchip on October 16, challenging Intel’s dominance in the PC central processing unit market. Following an unveiling at Microsoft’s Windows AI and Surface event in San Francisco where Jensen Huang joined Satya Nadella on stage, NVIDIA and Microsoft initiated pre-orders for RTX Spark Windows laptops with an October 16 release date, as noted by StorageReview. Reuters noted that Microsoft and Apple’s MacBook Pro will compete in the finished-device market, while NVIDIA and Intel will compete directly in the CPU market.
Microsoft and Dell Deploy RTX Spark Superchips
Microsoft unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra equipped with the RTX Spark N1X superchip, targeting creators, developers, and AI engineers. According to Dell Technologies, its premium Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition also incorporates the RTX Spark superchip, supporting 4K and 8K creative work, 3D rendering, AAA gaming, and local AI model development and inference. Equipped with a 3.2K Tandem OLED screen boasting VESA DisplayHDR True Black 600 certification, a contrast ratio of 1 million-to-1, and up to 1,000 nits of peak brightness, the Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition provides up to 4TB of SSD storage alongside a maximum of 128GB of unified memory. Additional RTX Spark-powered laptops from ASUS, HP, Lenovo, and MSI also launched globally on October 16.
Power Envelopes and Technical Specifications Differ Across Form Factors
According to StorageReview, the RTX Spark specification table from NVIDIA distinguishes desktops from laptops by assigning two N1X variants to portable systems: a 5,120-core GPU paired with an 18-core CPU and a 64GB memory ceiling, and a 6,144-core Blackwell RTX GPU with a 20-core Grace CPU and up to 128GB of unified LPDDR5X, with both options sharing a Total Design Power rating of 45 to 80W. Desktops utilize a 140W configuration featuring the 6,144-core, 20-core part with up to 128GB of memory. Microsoft’s Surface footnotes describe the maximum AI compute performance as reaching up to 1 petaflop of theoretical FP4 performance using sparsity, capable of running local AI models with more than 120 billion parameters.

Desktop AI Supercomputers Expand to Developers
While RTX Spark targets high-end Windows PC users, DGX Spark operates as a compact personal AI supercomputer designed specifically for AI developers and researchers, delivering up to 1 petaflop of FP4 AI performance.
