Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind, has challenged the narrative that artificial intelligence will inevitably lead to the widespread elimination of software engineering roles. In an interview with WIRED published on May 19, 2026, Hassabis argued that companies should utilize the productivity gains provided by AI to increase their output rather than using the technology as a justification for layoffs.

The discussion coincides with the introduction of Gemini 3.5 Flash, a model developed by Google DeepMind to handle complex agentic coding tasks. According to Hassabis, the model is capable of translating large code bases from one programming language to another and identifying and fixing bugs located deep within complex code. The model’s capabilities extend to writing entire operating systems from scratch.

Productivity Gains Versus Job Displacement

Despite the advanced coding abilities of Gemini 3.5 Flash, Hassabis stated that he does not believe these developments signal the end of programming careers. He expressed confusion regarding the certainty with which some observers predict the disappearance of these roles, suggesting that those spreading such messages may have ulterior motive[s], such as the desire to raise money.

Hassabis proposed a different framework for interpreting AI-driven efficiency. He suggested that if software engineers become three or four times more productive through the use of AI, the logical response for a company is to attempt to accomplish three or four times more work.

From my point of view, from DeepMind and Google’s point of view, if engineers are becoming three or four times more productive, then we just [want to] do three or four times more stuff.

Demis Hassabis

This perspective stands in contrast to the recent behavior of several other prominent technology firms. The WIRED report noted that executives at some AI companies have predicted widespread job displacement, and companies such as Block, Salesforce, and Amazon have attributed recent layoffs to the adoption of AI.

Alphabet’s Strategic Outlook

Hassabis indicated that Alphabet, the parent company of Google, is well-positioned to leverage this revolution in software productivity. Rather than reducing its workforce, he envisions a scenario where engineers are freed from routine coding tasks to focus on more ambitious projects.

Demis Hassabis On The Future of Work in the Age of AI

He cited a wide array of ideas that could be pursued with additional engineering capacity, specifically mentioning game design and lab drug discovery. Hassabis stated that he would prefer to have available engineers to dedicate their efforts to these types of innovations.

Hassabis warned that companies attempting to replace human developers with AI may be making a significant mistake, suggesting that the value of AI lies in augmenting human capability to expand what a company can achieve.
