Opposition Figures Rally Against Japanese Radioactive Water Dumping
Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung led a rally in downtown Seoul on the 2nd to protest against the Japanese government’s release of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The demonstration, attended by major opposition figures, aimed to put an end to the dumping of radioactive water.
In addition to the Democratic Party, the Basic Income Party, and the Progressive Party, held a joint national rally in front of the Press Center in Jung-gu, Seoul. The gathering was a condemnation of both the Korean and Japanese governments for allowing this environmental disaster to happen.
Participants at the rally, filling the four lanes from City Hall Station to Sejong-daero intersection, displayed pickets with slogans such as “withdraw from dumping contaminated water in Japan” and “condemn Seok-yeol Yoon’s regime.” They demanded an immediate halt to the dumping of contaminated water from Fukushima and the banning of Japanese seafood imports. The crowd chanted, “Ban it completely.”
Representative Lee Jae-myung, currently on his third day of a hunger strike, took to the podium along with other opposition figures to address the government’s inaction. He criticized the Korean government for not taking a firm stand against the release of contaminated water, questioning if the president could not confidently protect the country’s territory and maritime sovereignty.
Hae-in Yong, the permanent representative of the Basic Income Party, pointed out that the Yoon Seok-yeol government only relied on Tokyo Electric Power Company’s claims that the release was safe, undermining the concerns of the public. He emphasized the need for further scientific verification and warned about the long-lasting impact of nuclear pollutants on future generations.
Progressive Party floor leader Kang Seong-hee announced that Japanese fishermen will file a lawsuit against the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power to halt the discharge of contaminated water. He called for collective action to raise awareness about nuclear contamination.
Opposition groups opposing the rally, such as the Freedom and Unification Party, protested against the opposition figures by shouting for the arrest of Lee Jae-myung.
Public opinion heavily leans against the dumping of contaminated water, with 72.4% opposing it according to a recent survey. The same survey also revealed that 71.6% supported China’s ban on seafood imports from Japan in response to this issue.
Citizens and various organizations voiced their concerns during the rally. Kim Sam-ho, senior vice president of the Wando-gun Federation of the Federation of Korean Fishery Entrepreneurs, stressed the importance of protecting the ocean as it affects the future of families and generations to come.
Lee Seo-yoon, representative of Eco Cooperative Cooperative, highlighted the potential threats posed by extreme weather events to nuclear power plants located near the coastline. He urged for a proactive response to prevent a similar catastrophe to the Fukushima incident.
